>>In these two new poems--one translated from the Spanish, one written originally in English--Hugo García Manríquez offers a poetics of the undertext.  Music may be the most overt motif in these syncopated lines, but the socio-historical is never far under the surface either, operating as sound's dynamic counter-point.  It is this tension between sound and social fact--facts scattered as sound--that gives these compressed works their capacious sense of depth, each layer of text heading all the way down. <<

>>Born in Mexico, currently living in Oakland, Hugo García Manríquez is the author of two books of poetry in Spanish, No oscuro todavia (2005) and Los materiales (2008). Los materiales appeared in English in 2012 as Painting is Finite (LRL e-editions). His translations include works by William Carlos Williams and George Oppen, among others. Currently he is pursuing a doctoral degree in Spanish and Portuguese at UC Berkeley.<<
